I arrived confident, connected my laptop to the PLC, and… nothing. I tried again. I changed the cable. I restarted the software. By the third attempt, I was already thinking:

“What if the PLC has already crashed?”

Spoiler alert: nothing had crashed.

The detail that changes everything

After several useless attempts, I checked something as simple as it was critical:
my laptop’s IP address.

It was nowhere near the PLC’s range. I adjusted the address, reconnected, and… voila! There was the PLC, alive and well, responding as if the whole thing was my fault (which it was).

The moral of the day

Before blaming the PLC:

Check your IP address.

Confirm the network range.

Check drivers, adapters, and ports.

Make sure you are in the correct communication mode.

In industrial control, many “critical failures” are simply incorrect laptop settings.
Sometimes, the problem isn’t connecting… it’s you.

Conclusion

PLC-PC communication isn’t complicated, but it does require organization. A simple adjustment can save you minutes, stress, and unnecessary diagnostics.
The next time you have a connection issue, start with the basics.
